5 Qualities that make a Great Tutor
Intelligence: Being a good tutor is not just about being smart, having a good G.P.A or attending an elite school. When looking for a tutor here at Top Test Prep we look for tutors who have graduated from a top 25 university and scored in the top 1% of the test in which they tutor. That, however, is only the beginning of the qualities we are looking for.
Experience: After meeting the initial qualifications, we sit down with the tutor and ask them a series of questions to determine their past tutoring and teaching experience. Once we know what tests and subjects the tutor has taught before, we ask them to make a lesson plan. This involves us making a scenario that might be seen with a potential client. They create the lesson and then teach it. It is in this part of the interview process we are able to get a sense of a tutors patience, good humor, and personality.
Creativity: This is key when it comes to working with students. Every student is different and an approach that may work for one student may not work for another. It is important that the tutor has a variety of tools and knowhow to teach the same thing in different ways.
Patience: A tutor can be intelligent but they must be able to teach the material, be patient with a struggling student, and have a good attitude. Patience is a very important quality in a tutor. Students are all different and one may stumble on a problem that stumps them for several lessons. When the student repeatedly does not grasp a concept, even when approached a different way it is important that the tutor stay patient and positive. Patience goes hand in hand with another quality: attitude.
Attitude: Having a good attitude is as important as being intelligent, creative, and patient. The tutor is responsible for creating a positive atmosphere and learning environment. When the student becomes discouraged it is important for the tutor to remain positive and upbeat. Do let the student feed of any negative energy.
In the end, tutoring is always about finding the right fit for you and your family. Meet with someone, get to know them, see if your learning and teaching styles mesh.
