How to Get into Top MBA Programs

Tips on your Personal statement, GMAT, and more…

Personal statements are one of the best ways to stand out in the admissions process for top MBA programs. As an applicant, you’ll likely write four or five personal statements in order to tailor the statements for each program you’re applying for.

When it comes to personal statements, schools want to get an idea of how well you write and what your thought process is. Essentially, they want to learn more about how prospective business students think, work and relate to others.

In order to write a personal statement that stands out, pay attention to the following 11 admissions tips for writing the best possible MBA application personal statement.

Tip #1: Demonstration leadership potential
The first way to stand out is by writing about your leadership positions. MBA programs want to learn about leadership experiences to gauge each applicant’s leadership potential. Demonstrate your potential by highlighting work experience and non-profit positions that demonstrate your leadership capabilities.

Tip #2: Tailor your personal statement
The next thing you want to do is make sure your personal statement is tailor made for the school you are applying for. Every school has a different area of emphasis, and you want to show why you are a good candidate for that area of emphasis. Some schools concentrate on marketing, finance, IT, or accounting. You want to appeal to each particular school’s focus. You can learn more about rankings with Top Test Prep’s collaboration with US News and World Report for MBA programs, or by speaking with us directly.

As an example, Harvard Business School (HBS) does its best to do business with humanity in mind. In a personal statement for Harvard, you could write a personal statement about ethics related to business school. More and more schools are working ethics into their curriculum, so finding a way to work this into your personal statement is a good idea for every business school application.

UPenn (Wharton) is another example of a business school that focuses on making sure an MBA applicant has an ethical career track in mind. After all, there are so many MBA applications each year, and personal statements, that school want more than just strong GMAT scores.

Tip #3: Show initiative
Schools want to find students that are problem solvers and who come up with creative solutions. They also want to know what type of initiative you take and whether or not you have the natural leadership skills necessary to carry out a solution once you’ve come up with one.

Demonstrate this by writing about any work experience where you came up with the solution to a problem and then took the initiative to carry out the solution from start to finish. These kinds of experiences demonstrate that you are a strong MBA candidate.

Tip #4: Highlight volunteer work
MBA programs are also looking for well-rounded applicants that demonstrate awareness for the people and environment around them. Highlighting any volunteer experience you have with non-profit organizations in your area will show that you’re ready to make an impact not only in business but also in your community.

Tip #5: Articulate goals and aspirations
Business schools want to know what your professional goals are and how that fits in with your application for an MBA. Schools are looking for candidates that are very focused in their career applications to ensure that an MBA is a good fit for each candidate. Being specific about your career goals and aspirations will demonstrate this to business school admissions counselors.

Tip #6: Emphasize Successes and Team work
You’ll also want to emphasize any successes you’ve had in business. Demonstrate these experiences by discussing specific results from the projects you worked on that were successful and beneficial for the business or organization you were working for.

Tip #7: Explain Goal Achievement
Business schools are also looking for candidates that have goals and have demonstrated an ability to reach those goals. For example, if you had a goal to run a marathon and were able to achieve that goal, writing about this experience will help you to stand out by demonstrating your ability to set and achieve goals.

Tip #8: Show How You’ve Learned
Business schools not only want to know about the success you’ve had, they also want to know about what you’ve learned over the course of your career. Even if you had an experience that wasn’t so positive, writing about you learned in the process can demonstrate that even though the experience wasn’t a success, you learned a valuable lesson that make you a stronger candidate.

Tip #9: Explain Why Now
Business schools also want to know why right now is the best time for you to get an MBA. Personal statements provide a great opportunity to explain why an MBA is right for you and why right now is the best time for you to get one.

Tip #10: Be Authentic
One of the best ways to stand out in the MBA application process is to be authentic on your personal statement. You need to put your heart and soul into the admissions essay. Business schools want to see a passionate applicant that knows how to genuinely express himself or herself. A lot of candidates have similar work backgrounds and experiences, so be genuine and authentic. Telling your story is one way to stand out from hundreds of other applicants.

Tip #11: Don’t apologize
Here’s the one thing you don’t want to do: don’t use your personal statement to apologize for a low test score or a lack of work experience. Schools don’t care about excuses. Instead, don’t focus on something negative, and, instead, spin everything in a positive way.
