Living, Working, and Learning Under the Same Roof

If you have a live-in tutor or are considering one, here are some tips on maintaining a happy relationship.

·      Be upfront

·      Be honest

·      Have clear guidelines and expectations – these should include things about your home,  travel, vacation, guests, and tutoring

·      Have them on paper

·      Keep the lines of communication open

·      Don’t be afraid to voice concerns or have questions

You can’t read minds and neither does your tutor. The most important part of managing a live-in tutor is communication. From the very beginning have clear guidelines and expectations laid out on paper. It is critical to discuss and document the rules for living in your home or on your property. Discuss everything, down to if and when guests are okay, dining arrangements, personal space and use of the property amenities such as pools or gyms. Be upfront, be honest, and keep the lines of communication open. Do not be afraid to voice concerns or have questions for your tutor. They are an employee and no matter how much you have grown to love them, they are still there to do a job and provide a service.

Since communication is the crux of managing and having a good relationship with your tutor, I recommend a weekly or bi-weekly meeting with your tutor. This could be over coffee or breakfast, but consider it a check-in: a time for you and the tutor to talk about your child’s progress, changes in plans, or any issues that may have arisen.  Make sure everyone is on the same page and happy. Discuss grievances, and do not assume your tutor just “knows” these things. No matter if they have been a live-in tutor before or not, every family and student is different. Hiring a tutor to live with you can be a big decision. We can guide you through the process, from hiring and managing to selecting your perfect program.
