GMAT Test Prep:

GMAT test preparation is critical for getting the highest possible score. This post will help you come up with a strategy to get the most out of your GMAT test prep.

What is the GMAT exam?

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a computer adaptive standardized test in Mathematics and the English language for measuring aptitude to succeed academically in graduate business studies. Business schools commonly use the test as one of many selection criteria for admission into an MBA program. It is given at various locations around the world.

What’s on the GMAT?

The exam measures verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills that the examinee has developed over a long period of time in his/her education and work. The GMAT test takes about four hours to complete and includes a verbal, quantitative and analytical writing portion.

The GMAT score is a very important component for getting into top MBA programs. According to a survey conducted in 2008, 55% of the MBA admissions officers who were polled said that the GMAT score was the most important factor they considered for applicants. In fact, in order to get into a top 16 to top 25 business school, you’ll want to score between 630 and 650 on the GMAT to increase your chances of getting in. To get into a top 15 school, you’ll want to get a 650 or better, and a score of 700 or above will make you a very competitive candidate for any program.

Unlike other graduate school programs that heavily weight a students GPA, Business Schools pay more attention to a student’s GMAT score than GPA. If you have an average undergraduate GPA, an excellent score on the GMAT can be just what you need to get into a top MBA program.

So what’s the best way to prepare for the GMAT and improve your chances of getting into a top ranked school? What’s the best material to use when preparing for the GMAT, and how can you get the most out of your GMAT test prep?

Steps to prepare for the GMAT:

Step 1: Register for the exam
The first thing to do when preparing for the GMAT is to register for the exam; yes, it sounds trivial, but doing so will help you set a calendar date and all the studying should flow thereafter.

Step 2: Order the official GMAC study guides
After registering for the test, the best place to start when preparing for the GMAT exam is the official study material made available by the GMAC.

According to the GMAC website, you’ll be provided with:
1) A 15-question practice session for each type of GMAT question with answers and explanations for each section
2) 2 full-length practice tests with answers (detailed explanations of answers are not included)
3) Accurate computing of Verbal and Quantitative scores, which you can use to judge how prepared you are for the actual GMAT
4) A comprehensive math review
5) Real-time scoring

Step 3: Become familiar with the test
After ordering the study materials offered on the GMAC website, take some time to become familiar with the exam. Review the structure and the content and become familiar with the different sections, the types of questions found on each, etc.

Step 4: Take one of the official practice exams
The next step is to take one of the official GMAC practice exams. We recommend for you to take one of the practice exams when you begin preparing for the test in order to get a baseline score and to see which areas you need to improve the most.

We also recommend that you save the second practice exam until a month or three weeks before taking the actual test. By retaking the practice exam in the last month, you’ll have three or four remaining weeks to fine tune your preparation and focus on the areas of the test you need to improve the most. The diagnostic exams provided by GMAC are also very accurate and will predict your score within 20 points.

Step 5: Enroll in a Top Test Prep Course
Top Test Prep’s intensive GMAT tutoring helps students improve their scores on average between 70 and 130 points. After taking one of the practice exams and getting a baseline score to see where you can improve, we recommend enrolling in one of our GMAT private tutoring programs in order to maximize your preparation time and improve your final GMAT score the most. Top Test Prep’s GMAT tutoring is one of the most important components of any GMAT test prep strategy.

Step 6: Prepare for three to four months
The next step to prepare for the exam is to spend the next three to four months conducting an intense review and preparation. The bulk of this time should be spent focusing on areas of the test where you are the weakest. Top Test Prep can help you to come up with a personal study program improves any weaknesses you may have. Our specialty is tailoring each tutoring program to meet each individual students particular needs.

Step 7: Take the second practice exam
After preparing for three to four months, you should take the second practice exam to re-evaluate which areas you still need to improve in order to focus the last few weeks of preparation on those areas. One of the practice exams can be taken again in the last week to get into a test taking mindset before the actual exam.

Step 8: Take the GMAT with confidence
If you follow steps one through seven above, once it’s time to take the exam, you’ll be ready to take the GMAT with confidence. You’ll have seen each type of question more than once and nothing will take you by surprise.

Effective preparation is the key to excelling on the GMAT exam, and that’s why our motto is “Fear No Test.” Once you’ve been through our tutoring program, you’ll be ready to improve your score between 70 and 130 points and be on your way to getting into a top MBA program.
