Helpful GRE Exam Information
As you begin preparing for the GRE, it’s critical to understand the computer adaptive nature of the test. Unlike other exams, the GRE adapts the types of questions it asks based on how correctly you answer the first few questions in each section. If you do poorly on the first 10 or so questions, it will have a significant impact on your final score. If you do well, on the other hand, your final score will positively reflect the outcome of your answers to the first 10 or so questions.
So if you want to do well on the GRE, it’s imperative that you know how to leverage the computer adaptive nature of the test. This information will help you prepare…
What’s on the GRE exam
The GRE measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills, and the test consists of four sections. The first section is a writing section, and the other three are multiple-choice styled sections. One of the multiple choice sections tests verbal skills, another tests quantitative skills, and a third exam is an experimental section that is not included in the reported score. Test takers do not know which of the three multiple-choice sections is the experimental section, so you need to try your hardest on all of the sections. The entire test procedure takes about 4 hours. (You can learn more about the exact breakdown of the test on here.)
The GRE Computer Adaptive Sections
Now that you know what’s on the exam, you need to learn the best strategies for the computer adaptive portions of the test. The computer adaptive portions are the verbal and quantitative multiple-choice portions of the test. Here’s the how the computer-adaptive testing works: as you take the exam, the difficulty of each section is automatically changed by the computer depending on whether you answer a question right or not. If you answer the question right, you are moved to a new, harder level of questions. If you answer incorrectly, you do not move on to the harder level of questions. This is especially true for the first 10 or so questions of the exam.
Since the goal is to be moved on to the highest level of questions as possible, it’s important to do as well as possible on the first 10 or so questions because how well you do on these questions will have a significant impact on your final score.
The Best GRE Prep Strategy
Since the multiple-choice sections of the exam are computer adaptive, the following prep strategies are advised:
1. Take adequate time on the first ten questions: How well you do on the first 10 questions has a significant impact on your final score. To ensure you do as well as possible, remember to take your time on this portion of the test.
2. Don’t be afraid of the clock: Since the clock is always ticking as you take the exam, it’s really easy to become conscience of how long it’s taking to answer each question. This is especially true for the first few questions. Since these questions are the most important, do your best to ignore the clock and take the time you need to get the questions right.
3. Take timed practice exams: The best way to get prepared for the stress of any graduate exam is to take timed practice tests. These practice tests simulate the circumstances experienced on the day the actual exam is taken, and there’s no better way to prepare for the pressure than to simulate the exam. As you take multiple timed practice test, you’ll get more and more familiar with the types of questions that are asked and how much time you’ll have to answer each question while still having enough time to finish.
4. Get a private tutor: It can’t be stressed enough how helpful a private tutor can be for improving your score. With Top Test Prep as an example, all of our GRE tutors have scored in the top 1 percent for the GRE on all sections, both verbal and quantitative. This kind of knowledge of the GRE material and experience with taking the exam becomes priceless as you prepare for the exam.
There’s no better way to get ready for the GRE than tutoring sessions with someone who has already done well on the exam and is also trained in how to most effectively teach take the exam. It’s a winning formula that has helped Top Test Prep raise test takers scores often by more than 300 points.
