What is the ISEE Exam?
The ISEE consists of standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning tests that measure a student’s capability for learning, and reading comprehension and mathematics achievement tests that provide specific information about an individual’s strengths and weaknesses in those areas. All levels include a timed essay written in response to an assigned topic. The essay is not scored, but a copy is forwarded to the recipient schools along with the Individual Student Report, which shows scaled scores, and percentiles.

The first four sections consist entirely of multiple-choice questions with four answer choices.

How is the ISEE scored?
The number of questions that you have answered correctly is called your “raw score.” You get one point for every question that you answer correctly, but no points for a question you answer incorrectly or omit. Therefore, it’s best to make an educated guess.
A scaled score is a raw score that has been converted to a different numerical scale, e.g., 200–800. The raw score scale ranges from 0–maximum score, while the scaled score range consists of higher numbers with a somewhat arbitrary minimum and maximum score. The range of scaled scores on the ISEE is 760–940.
Results are reported in percentile ranks; that is, each student’s performance is measured against a norm group made up of students applying to independent schools in the same grade who have tested over the past three years.
This is the most recent data released by the ERB. The ERB does not release percentile equivalencies for the scaled scores. Your quartile score is based on how you compare to other students applying to the same grade.
Are there any breaks on the ISEE exam?
There are two breaks: one following the Quantitative Reasoning section and another following the Math Achievement section. Each break is five minutes long.
What are some good strategies to prepare for the ISEE exam?
*There is no penalty for guessing on the ISEE. Make educated guesses by eliminating 2 to 3 choices. Leave no blanks on the ISEE!
*Except for reading comprehension, all questions on both exams are arranged from easiest to hardest – so be sure to go in order of difficulty and expect to spend more time on later problems.
*Don’t waste time reading instructions – you should already know these from your TTP instructor.
*Bring all of your supplies – #2 pencils and a watch (some digital watches are not allowed). You can also bring a blue or black ink pen for your writing your essay.
