What is the ISEE Exam?

The ISEE is a standardized test used for private and boarding school admissions. There are three levels: the lower level (currently in grades 4-5), the middle level (currently in grades 6-7) and the upper level (currently in grades 8-11).

What’s on the ISEE exam?

The ISEE consists of standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning tests that measure a student’s capability for learning, and reading comprehension and mathematics achievement tests that provide specific information about an individual’s strengths and weaknesses in those areas. All levels include a timed essay written in response to an assigned topic. The essay is not scored, but a copy is forwarded to the recipient schools along with the Individual Student Report, which shows scaled scores, and percentiles.   The ISEE tutoring program at Top Test Prep provides support for all section of the ISEE examination.

How is the ISEE scored?

The number of questions that you have answered correctly is called your “raw score”. You are not penalized for wrong answers, so you should make sure that you answer all of the questions in every section. The ISEE then provides you with a scaled score, which is a raw score that has been converted to a different numerical scale between 200 and 800. The range of a scaled scores on the ISEE is 760-940.

Results are also reported in percentile ranks; that is, each student’s performance is measured against a norm group made up of students applying to independent schools in the same grade who have tested over the past three years.

Are there any breaks on the ISEE exam?

There are two breaks in the ISEE exam: one following the Quantitative Reasoning section, and another following the Math Achievement section. Each break is five minutes long.
