Helpful MCAT exam information

What is the MCAT exam?

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is a standardized, multiple-choice examination designed to assess the examinee’s problem solving, critical thinking, writing skills, and knowledge of science concepts and principles prerequisite to the study of medicine. Scores are reported in Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Writing Sample, and Biological Sciences. Medical colleges consider MCAT exam scores as part of their admission process.
The MCAT is a knowledge-based exam, and understanding fundamental math and sciences concepts is essential to doing well on the exam.

What’s on the MCAT exam?

The MCAT is a 6+ hour test, consisting of 4 sections: Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Writing Sample. The highest MCAT score is a 45T, and students can prepare for the MCAT through practicing Verbal, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences and Writing Skills with a trained MCAT tutor.

Is there a penalty for guessing on the MCAT?

There is no penalty for guessing, so make sure to answer every question.

What’s the Verbal section of the MCAT?

Questions will be presented in order of easiest to most difficult on the MCAT verbal section. The Verbal section of the MCAT tests a students ability to understand an author’s argument and perspective, as well as to critically think about reading and writing in a way that illustrates one’s perspective, and further ability in the future to characterize complex issues to medical patients. Thus, it makes sense then that the Verbal section can be dense and overwhelming, but with the right prep you can improve your verbal MCAT score.

What are the score ranges on the MCAT?

Each section of the test first receives a “raw score.” On the three multiple-choice sections (Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Verbal reasoning), the raw score is calculated on the number of questions answered correctly. No points are deducted for questions answered incorrectly.

On the Writing Sample, the raw score is determined by adding the scores that readers assign to each of the two essays that you write. Two readers read each of your essays, so the raw score is the sum of four readers’ scores.

Each raw score is then converted into a scaled score. For the three multiple-choice sections, scaled scores range from 1-15.

For the writing sample, scaled scores are reported on an alphabetic scale from J-T. J-L below average, M-Q is average, and R-T is above average.

What are MCAT score ranges?

MCAT Section, MCAT National Average Score
Verbal Reasoning: Approximately 8.5
Physical Sciences: Approximately 8.8
Biological Sciences: Approximately 9.1
Writing: N

How to Improve Your Score on the MCAT

Helpful tips before you complete your medical school apps

The MCAT is the most misunderstood and the most feared aspect of the medical school admissions process. It’s also the most intense of all the graduate school exams, taking nearly six hours to complete and covering physical sciences, verbal reasoning, a writing sample, and biological sciences.

Some students do very well in one of the science sections, and some do well in both but stumble on the verbal section. It’s important to keep in mind that a receiving a balanced score is important in order to be the strongest candidate possible for medical school.

To help you learn how to improve your score, this information covers three steps to demystify the MCAT by covering:

1. What the MCAT assesses
2. How the test is scored
3. The three “Bs” for taking the MCAT

The Four Main Sections Tested on the MCAT

The MCAT tests four main sections in the following order and in the following way:

1. Physical sciences: 52 questions over 70 minutes
2. Verbal reasoning: 40 questions over 60 minutes
3. Writing sample: 2 essays over 60 minutes
4. Biological sciences: 52 questions over 70 minutes

How the MCAT is Scored

The Physical Sciences, Verbal Reasoning, and Biological Sciences are all scored on a scale of 1 to 15, and the writing sample is scored on a scale from J-T. Based on these parameters, the highest score possible is a 45-T.

The Three B’s for Taking the MCAT

The three B’s for taking the MCAT are balance, better than the mean, and the best score possible.

First, we’ll talk about balance. A balanced score is arguably the most important component of an MCAT result. For example, a 36-T with a 12 in each section and a writing sample of T is an excellent score. As a comparison, a 29-R with a Physical Sciences score of 9, a Verbal Reasoning score of 9, and a Biological Sciences score of 10 with a solid writing sample score of R can be more preferable than a widely varied score of 33-J. A balanced score can outweigh a higher score that is not balanced.

The second B, better than the mean, refers to a good MCAT score that is above one standard deviation which is approximately six points above the mean. This translates to roughly a 10 in each section and a P or a Q on the writing sample for a score of roughly 30-P or 30-Q.

The third B, the best score possible, may seem obvious, but actually, you need to be honest with yourself. You need to ask whether or not you are as prepared as you possibly can be for the MCAT exam.

One way to assess this is to ask if you can teach the material to someone else. If not, then you may not be ready to take the exam and get the best possible score. Many people underestimate what it takes to succeed on the MCAT the first time and end up scoring lower than the best possible score. Adequately preparing for the exam can help you avoid this mistake.

What you should do next…

Investing the time in yourself by preparing for the MCAT exam is vital. Top Test Prep can you help you develop the best possible plan to make you as prepared as possible to take the MCAT exam. All of Top Test Prep’s MCAT tutors have scored in the top 1% percentile for the MCAT exam on all four sections: Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and the Writing Sample, and all of Top Test Prep’s tutors are trained to customize the study curriculum for each individual student.
