About the PSAT exam
What is the PSAT exam?
The PSAT is a shorter, reasoning-based exam designed so that you can predict your future performance on the SAT.
When is the PSAT exam offered?
The exam is offered by most high schools in the fall, more specifically, October of your sophomore or Junior year.
Helpful tips and strategies for the PSAT
What are good strategies for the PSAT exam?
Always eliminate answers, and make educated guesses as complete your PSAT exam.
On the PSAT reading section, consider the main idea and feeling of each passage.
On the PSAT math section, when in doubt, compare to formulas you know, plug in numbers or answer choices.
On the PSAT writing section: if it sounds wrong, it probably is as a rule of thumb.
We’ve got many more strategies to help you improve your PSAT exam scores.
How does the PSAT compare to the SAT?
The PSAT is much shorter, doesn’t require you to write an essay, and doesn’t test you on some of the more advanced concepts from second-year algebra. They’re essentially the same, though, and the PSAT can be used as a great practice for the SAT.
What’s on the PSAT Exam?
The PSAT/NMSQT includes five sections for a total scaled score of 60-240.
(2) 25-minute critical reading sections, scored together on a 20-80 scale
(2) 25-minute math sections, scored together on a 20-80 scale
(1) 30-minute writing skills section, scored on a 20-80 scale
Will colleges see your PSAT scores?
No. However, you can give the PSAT permission to send your profile to schools you’re planning on applying to; if you do select schools, they usually just see your profile, which includes demographic information and usually not scores.
How are National Merit Scholars selected?
Usually the top 4% of testers will receive academic scholarships based on their performance on the PSAT. About 50,000 students of the 1.25+ million who take the PSAT as juniors receive National Merit honors on the basis of high PSAT index scores. One thing to note: because many high school sophomores and juniors don’t take the exam seriously, you can benefit greatly from their lack of prep and your dedication to getting a scholarship.
Are there breaks on the PSAT?
There will be a 5-minute break after Section 2 and a short 1-minute stretch break after Section 4.
Can I use a calculator on the PSAT?
Yes, you can use a calculator – although they’re generally neither required nor needed to successfully perform on the PSAT.
