Frequently asked questions/answers about the SAT

What is the SAT Exam?

The SAT is a college admissions exam developed to assess a student’s academic reasoning skills in Math, Critical Reading and Writing.

How difficult is the SAT?

The SAT exam can be very difficult for students who are unprepared and for those who don’t take several SAT practice exams. However, knowing the breakdown of the exam can help you prepare accordingly: the SAT exam consists of SAT Math sections with two 25-minute sections and one 20-minute section; SAT Critical Reading sections with two 25-minute sections and one 20-minute section, and SAT writing sections of one 25 minute section, one 10 minute section, and 25 minutes to compose a brief essay.

What’s on the SAT math section(s) and what can one expect on the SAT test?

It’s a reasoning-based exam that requires no more than Intermediate Algebra and 11th grade level reading and writing skills. Questions in an SAT section usually go from the easiest to the hardest. Try to go through the easy ones quickly but carefully, and plan to use more time on later problems. The exception to the easiest-to-hardest rule is the critical reading questions. These follow the development of the passage.

Can I use a calculator on the SAT?

Yes. However, you should check with the SAT organization (College Board) to make sure it’s an approved calculator.

How long is the SAT exam?

The SAT is approximately 3.5 hours including short breaks.

How is the SAT exam scored?

Each section of the SAT (Reading, Writing, & Math) is given a score out of 800; total scores are out of 2400.

All questions count the same, regardless of difficulty.

The essay is graded by two readers who will each give it a score out of 6, for a total score of 2-12. Blank essays, essays that are not on topic, essays written in pen, or illegible essays will receive a score of 0.
At random, one of the 3 main SAT sections will have an additional “test” subsection that will not be graded. Students will not know ahead of time which section will have the extra subsection.

Is there a penalty for guessing on the SAT?

Multiple choice questions receive 1 point for each correct answer. There is a guessing penalty on the SAT, and scores will be docked ¼ point for incorrect answers. Therefore, it’s best to guess only if you’ve been able to eliminate at least two of the answer options.

Helpful tips and strategies for the SAT

How to prep for the SAT

The SAT is owned and published by the College Board, and it’s intended to evaluate students’ academic readiness for college. Taking either the SAT exam or the ACT exam is required by nearly all U.S. colleges and universities.

In order to score well on the SAT, it’s important to do well on all three sections of the exam. These sections include: math, reading, and writing. Each section of the exam is worth 800 points for a perfect combined score of 2400.

Below is an introduction to the SAT exam, a breakdown of the three different sections, and tips on how you can improve your scores.

The Math Section

The math section covers Algebra I, Geometry, and some Algebra II. The exam also has three math sections with 20 to 25 minutes per section.

One of the best ways to approach the math problems on the SAT is to view them as puzzles. The problems on the exam will challenge you by asking you to use formulas you’ve learned in school on problems that you haven’t seen before. You have to use familiar formulas on unfamiliar problems.

The majority of the math questions are multiple choice, but there are also some free answer questions. As a help, a chart with the most important formulas are provided at the beginning of every math section. Nearly all of the formulas needed for the test can be found in this chart. It’s worthwhile to become familiar with the chart before taking the exam in order to be ready for the types of problems that will be asked.

The Reading Section

The reading section of the SAT tests your reading comprehension and vocabulary. This part of the exam has three reading sections with 20 to 25 minutes per section. The common question types used are sentence completion, questions about short reading passages, and questions about long reading passages.

The largest portion of the reading section has questions about reading passages where students read short excerpts from a variety of subjects such as social sciences, humanities, physical sciences, and personal narratives. Students are then asked to answer questions based on the passages, and the questions test each student’s level of reading comprehension. There also sections that ask students to compare two different reading passages that are related.

The Writing Section

The writing section of the SAT tests students ability to improve sentences, improve paragraphs, and compose an essay on a given topic. The writing section includes multiple choice questions and a brief essay. As a breakdown of the scoring, the essay is worth approximately 28% of the total writing score, and the multiple choice questions are worth about 70%.

The types of questions used on the multiple choice portion of the writing exam are error identification questions, sentence improvement questions, and paragraph improvement questions. The first two types of questions test each students knowledge of grammar by presenting grammatically incorrect or awkward sentences and asking them to select the right fix from a set of multiple choice answers. The last type of questions, paragraph improvement, test students understanding of the best way to organize ideas in a paragraph. Poorly written paragraphs are presented, and students have to choose what the best ways to improve the paragraphs are.

There is also an essay that must be written for the writing portion of the SAT. The essay is graded separately but is factored into the total SAT writing score. The essay is read by two different graders and each grader gives it a score out of 6 with the top writing score being a 12.
